CVMHA & KPMHA Summer 2010 Update
A message from the Presidents and 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents of CVMHA and KPMHA
To Cowichan Valley, and Kerry Park Minor Hockey members:
As we enter the last month of summer, we realize the hockey season is only one month away. Throughout the summer, planning for the 2010-11 season has been ongoing and members of your executives have been busy. There are 600 players registered at Cowichan Valley, and 300 players registered at Kerry Park, we are looking forward to an exciting season!
This past June, the Presidents, and 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents of the two associations got together for an informal meeting and discussed a number of issues, which included female hockey, amalgamation, and the carding of competitive teams.
The meeting also served to put names to faces, establish lines of communication, and to lay out some areas where both MHA’s can work together in the development of our players.
For example, CVMHA and KPMHA will continue to coordinate their support for female hockey. Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association (VIAHA) is initiating a number of changes to this program, and therefore is it vital that both CVMHA and KPMHA work together to support our female players.
The meeting also discussed the subject of amalgamation. For those not familiar with the history on this issue, CVMHA and KPMHA joined together for one season in 2005-2006. After which each MHA have operated as separate associations. The executive boards of both CVMHA and KPMHA recognize the subject of amalgamation continues to be of interest to some members in both associations.
This subject, which is very complex, will be discussed again at the board level of each MHA this season. However, no formal action on amalgamation is currently planned. Both associations agree to leave this topic open for ongoing discussion.
Each year, many minor hockey associations encounter some challenges. One is registration numbers. The 2010/2011 season is no exception for both CVMHA, and KPMHA.
For example, there may be just enough players to card a competitive team, or there are too many players for one team in an age category, but not enough players for two teams. Another issue that occurs every season is, “do we have enough goalies for the number of players registered”.
The executives of each MHA are governed and guided by many regulations established by BC Hockey, and VIAHA. Both MHA’s regularly discuss the regulations that guide the carding of teams, player movement, releases, and other details so as to ensure they are operating correctly under these regulations. Where regulations enable collaboration, we will work together, at the registrar, and board level, to ensure the best possible opportunities for all the players registered in each MHA.
On behalf of the Presidents and 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents of CVMHA and KPMHA, we hope you enjoy the month of August and we look forward to seeing everyone on the ice in September or before!
